Healthcare
Healthcare - an overlooked business opportunity
Low and moderate income areas often face inadequate healthcare. Partnerships between healthcare providers and CDCs have the potential to significantly raise the quality of life for residents while at the same time providing business opportunities and jobs.
A wide variety of healthcare facilities can address the needs of CDC residents. Several CDCs have engaged in restructuring of entire hospital facilities. Others have helped establish neighborhood clinics. One of the most promising models for CDC resident involvement is creation of a cooperative for home heath care providers. Which employ neighborhood people and can lead to a career ladder in the health care field. Other entrepreneurial activities include local pharmacies, labs and testing facilities for various medical purposes. Several CDCs have become actively involved in the creation and expansion of Community Health Centers. Remember, CDCs own land which can be used for development of health care facilities - and they have access to a trainable work force.
